Museum Overview
The Prestongrange Museum is located in Morrisons Haven near Prestonpans, East Lothian. It is an industrial heritage museum where for centuries the site has been a place of intense industrial activity. These include a harbour, glassworks, pottery, colliery and also a brickworks.
The site is cradled by woodland and enjoys views over the Forth, It is now a haven for wildlife and you are free to roam and explore the monumental relics of Scotland’s industrial heritage. You can enjoy an audio tour and there are interpretation boards exploring the history of the site.
You will be able to see some giant machines such as the pit head winding gear and a Cornish beam engine. There is a powerhouse and a vast brick kiln as well as coal wagons, a steam crane and more. You can visit the site for free all year round but the best time to visit is between April and September when the visitor centre is open.
Inside the visitor centre, there are exhibitions, a cafe and other buildings that are open. You can take a guided tour with one of their knowledgeable staff members and discover the history of the site including the story of the monks that once mined the site and more. They also run a programme of events for all ages including activity sheets, outdoor games and toys and an indoor play area for children.
