Rhuddlan Castle

Rhuddlan Castle

Rhuddlan Castle is located in Rhuddlan in Denbighshire, Wales. It was built in 1277 by Edward I following the First Welsh War. Edward I lived there for a while while he consolidated his conquest of Wales.

Rhuddlan is situated next to the River Clwyd. During the castle’s construction, the river was straightened and dredged to allow ships to sail inland along a man-made channel. This allowed the passage of provisions and troops to reach the castle safely. Edward, I liked his castles to be by the sea but as Rhuddlan Castle is several miles inland he had the changes to the river made to suit his needs.

Today the castle is a ruin that is managed by Cadw Wales. There is an inner diamond-shaped stronghold with twin-towered gatehouses.
