Royal Armouries Fort Nelson is located in the Portchester area of Portsmouth in Hampshire. It is a restored Victorian fortress which houses a big gun collection and displays a number of artillery items. You will step back in time and visit the original fortifications, massive parade ground and high ramparts with some stunning panoramic views. There are also underground tunnels, kitchens, barracks and children’s activities.

The museum has over 700 pieces of artillery from across the world that span 600 years of history. This includes a 15th-century Turkish bombard cannon, a gigantic 200-tonne railway howitzer and the infamous Iraqi supergun.

Today the main underground tunnel is open for visitors to explore as well as the bypass tunnel that allowed men to get across the fort without going through the magazine itself. The venue also hosts a number of annual events. The museum is free, to visit and it is advised to book your free, ticket in advance to guarantee your visit.
