The RSPB Conwy Nature Reserve is located in Conwy, North Wales. It is a wetland on the east bank of the Conwy estuary that was created from material dug out during the construction of the A55 road tunnel.
The site is now home to a variety of wildlife and it is a great place to introduce families to nature. There are walks on offer at the site and a boardwalk through a reedbed. The site has two lagoons which attract waders and waterbirds, especially from August to March. High tide tends to bring the birds to the site as the river pushers waders roost and feed on the islands.
There are trails to follow through mixed scrub and grassland which are dotted with temporary pools, These are a haven for dragonflies and butterflies in the summer. There is a circular trail that also takes you along the edge of the estuary that has a stunning backdrop of the Carneddau mountains beyond.
The reserve is around 50 hectares in size. Families can collect one of their bingo cards from the visitor centre which encourages you to take a closer look at the reserve. During the school holidays, there are self-guided activity trails to follow. They also host a number of family-friendly events and activities. There are also viewing hides and screens that have been designed with smaller people in mind. The centre also has an outdoor play area.
