Rufford Old Hall

Rufford Old Hall is a National Trust property in Rufford, Lancashire. The hall was built around 1530 for Sir Robert Hesketh but only the great hall survives from the original structure. The Jacobean-style brick-built wing was added in 1661 and then a third wing in the 1820s.

The house is surrounded by Victorian and Edwardian gardens. The house itself also has connections to Shakespeare where you can discover why plus stories of romance, wealth and 500 years of the family’s history. There are rooms to explore which include the stunning great hall.

You can also extend your visit by taking a walk through tranquil woodland or along the Leeds/Liverpool canal. At the centre of the property, there is a cobbled 18th-century courtyard with stables, piggery and more. There are some wonderful yew topiaries that kids will love spotting.

They also have garden games laid out on the lawn for you to play. Plus there is a daily programme of things to do with family-friendly activities in the school holidays and at weekends. They even have balance bikes for little ones to practice on. The gardens and grounds are well known for their seasonal, carpet of bluebells.

Dog friendly?

Dogs are welcome in the Courtyard, North Paddock and North Woods. However, due to the nature of the gardens and the wildlife we have here, we can only allow assistance dogs into the formal gardens. Please note that dogs are to be kept on a lead at all times whilst on site.
