Saltburn-by-the-Sea Beach

Saltburn-by-the-sea is one of North Yorkshire’s prettiest seaside resorts. It is a lot smaller than Scarborough and Whitby but there’s still plenty to see and do and the beach is well worth spending some time on.

What is there to do at Saltburn-by-the-Sea Beach?

At high tide, there is just a small pebbled section of beach accessible on foot but at low tide, there is a vast expanse of golden sandy beach. The highlight of the town is the funicular railway from 1884. It has stained glass windows and offers rides from the top of the town with its many restaurants down to the beach and its tourist attractions.

The lift stops right in front of the pier and it is incredibly picturesque. The pier has a small amusement arcade and the pier comes to life at night with coloured lights. There are some pretty colourful beach huts and a crazy golf course. Plus a little way inland you will find a wonderful miniature railway. The railway runs past a play area and gardens and up to Saltburn Valley woodland centre.

Please note that due to a fire, the lift is currently operational. They are working to repair the lift but it may take some time.

Is there food and drink available?

There is a great selection of cafes and restaurants at the top of the town including fish and chips.

What are the main things to do?

The beach has public toilets, a historic funicular lift, a pier with amusements, beach huts and crazy golf. Plus a miniature railway slightly inland.

Is there parking?

You can park at the top for free, or there are a couple of pay-and-display car parks at the bottom by the sea.

When are they open?

The beach is accessible all year round although if the lift is closed and you park at the top it is quite a steep walk.

Dog friendly?

Dogs are welcome on the beach from autumn to winter. In the summer months, dogs cant access the beach from the pier to Hazelgrove.
