Museum Overview

The Sanquhar Tolbooth Museum is located in Sanquhar, Dumfries and Galloway. It is located on the High Street and the Category A listed building contains a local history museum.

The tolbooth that it was named after dated back to the late 15th century. It was demolished in the mid-1700s and replaced with a new building on the same site. In the museum, you can discover Sanquhar’s world-famous knitting tradition and the story of the mines and miners of the local area.

You can discover what it was like to be a prisoner in Sanquhar jail and see how the ordinary people in the area lived and worked. There is a free, audiovisual presentation and various galleries.
