Museum Overview
The Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences is the geology museum of the University of Cambridge located in the city centre. It is located on the University Downing Site and it is open to the public.
The museum was founded in 1728 and is the oldest of the eight museums which make up the University of Cambridge Museum’s consortium. There is a large collection of rocks, minerals and fossils spanning a period of 4.5 billion years. The museum is responsible for the care of approximately 2 million specimens from around the world.
The vast collection is organised into five main categories – fossils, minerals, rocks, building stones and the ‘Woodwardian collection’ Only a small proportion of the collections are on display. The museum has a selection of free, trails, pick up one for your little explorers to take around the museum.
