What is there to do at Shepton Mallet Prison?

At the former prison, you will be able to step back in time and discover an array of artefacts, documents and photographs. There are prisoners’ belongings which were discovered hidden throughout the site and a collection of officer accessories.

The prison was built in 1610 following an Act introduced by King James I which stated that all counties had to have their own ‘House of Correction’. The prison is associated with many tales of paranormal activity and ghosts. The most popular story is that of the White Lady who has been seen in several places. Staff and prisoners would often complain of an icy wind moving through A wing with a sweet smell of perfume and shadowy figures. The Kary twins were also held here after deserting the British Army.

You can explore the whole prison at your leisure or you can join a guided tour. Their guides have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the prison’s history and they will shine a light on what life was like for prisoners. There is 1 tour mid-week and two a day at weekends. There is also a couple of escape rooms.
