What is there to do at Somerset Coalfield Life at Radstock Museum?

Their permanent displays tell you of the life of a Somerset miner and his family. They show how the communities of the coalfield were integrated. The displays are across two floors in a listed building which was once the Radstock Market Hall.

The ground floor has displays showing the local trades and industries which support the community. The Somerset Coalfield had 75 coal mines across 240 square miles. There is a reconstructed coal mine and through candlelit darkness, you will be able to see for yourself how dangerous and difficult it was for the men and the boys that worked in the mines. You can hear the sounds of their picks and shovels.

There is a miner’s cottage where you can see how the miner’s wife once managed daily life. You can go into her laundry room and outside privy. Local trades and industries shown in exhibitions include breweries, boots and shoe mending, brass and iron foundry, blacksmith’s forge and a Victorian printing office.
