South Wales Miners Museum

Museum Overview
The South Wales Miners Museum is situated close to the village of Cynonville, near Port Talbot, South Wales. It is a volunteer-run coal miner’s museum located in the Afan Valley Forest Park.
The museum was the first of its kind in Wales and it first opened in 1976. There is a traditional miner’s cottage with display cabinets containing historical photos and documents. The museum saw some rebuilding in 2008 and a recreation of a tunnel was added plus a realistic stable with a miner, his pit pony and trailer.
Outdoors there are a number of exhibits including a blacksmith’s shop, a lamp room, a pithead wheel, a haulage engine and a coal dram. There are often knowledgeable guides on-site and you can also take around a handheld audio tour. It is advised to ring ahead to prebook your visit so you can book on one of their guided tours.
