Southend Central Museum and Planetarium
Southend Central Museum and Planetarium is located in Southend-on-sea in Essex. The museum is home to collections of local and natural history plus there is a planetarium that was constructed by the astronomer Harry Ford in 1984.
The museum was originally built in 1905 and was originally home to a library. The building was commissioned and paid for by the famous philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. There is a permanent display of the incredible Anglo-Saxon Prittlewell Princely Burial plus a mummified cat, a full-length replica of the Bayeux Tapestry and other interesting objects.
There is a rolling programme of temporary exhibitions every year and the Planetarium runs a range of fascinating talks that focus on the night sky. These shows are very popular so advance booking is recommended.
