Southend Pier and Railway

Southend Pier and Railway

Southend Pier and Railway are located on the Western Esplanade in Southend-On-Sea, Essex. The pier has a narrow gauge railway that runs from 1.25 miles along the 1.34-mile length of Southend Pier. It provides public passenger transport from the shore to the Pier Head.

The Pier train travels at 8-10mph and when travelling through the points the speed drops to 5mph. The current trains went into service in 2021. Southend Pier is the longest pleasure pier in the world and a pier was first built here in 1889.

There is a museum with exhibits about the pier’s history including a restored working pier signal box and a small collection of working old penny slot machines. There is also a crazy golf course located at the end of the pier with 18 themed holes. You can even fish from the pier, this is available to anyone and tickets can be purchased on the day. Simply bring along your rod and bait and enjoy views from the end of the pier.
