Southsea Castle
Southsea Castle, historically known as Chaderton Castle is located on Portsea Island, Hampshire. It is an artillery fort that was originally constructed by Henry VIII. It is open free of charge between April and October.
You can explore the keep and enjoy panoramic views from the top with views to the Isle of Wight and the Solent. Inside there are a number of displays giving visitors the chance to learn more about the history of the castle and see some of the key artefacts that once played a role at the castle. There are a number of artefacts which were recovered from the Mary Rose when it was raised from the sea bed in 1982. Lights showcase major points of interest to tell the story of how the castle and the surrounding area would have looked on that fateful day.
The ramparts offer the best views out to sea and down into the courtyard below. This is also a great spot for enjoying some of their annual events including their Victorious Festival celebrations. There are a number of cannons on the ramparts. Tunnel tours are also available. These are short guided walks which allow you to explore much further into the fortification. When in operation these free tours take place on Wednesdays and Sundays, twice a day. Places are limited so please enquire when you arrive or ring ahead to check availability.
