St Davids Bishops Palace

St Davids Bishops Palace

St David’s Bishops Palace is located in St David’s near Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. It is a magnificent ruined medieval palace located next to St David’s Cathedral. It is one of the most important ecclesiastical sites in Wales.

The site dates back to the 6th century although the ruins that stand today are largely from the late 13th and 14th centuries. It is open as a visitor attraction and also as an open-air theatre. In the 12th century, the pope decreed that two trips to St David’s were equal to one to Rome which turned it into a centre of pilgrimage for the Western world. Thousands flocked to see the shrine of St David.

It was then later turned into an immense palace with a range purely for show and ceremony. Even as a ruin this palace beside the neighbouring cathedral remains an awe-inspiring space to explore.
