Stirling Castle

Stirling Castle

Stirling Castle is located in the centre of Stirling, Stirlingshire. It is one of the largest and most important castles in Scotland and provides a family-friendly day out.

Things to do at Stirling Castle

The castle sits on top of Castle Hill which is an intrusive crag which forms part of the Stirling Sill geological formation. Earlier parts of the castle date back to the 12th century and most of the principal buildings date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Before the union with England, the castle was one of the most used of the many Scottish Royal residences and several Scottish Kings and Queens have been crowned here, where others were born or died there.

Inside you can see the Great Hall that was built for James IV around 1503 and you can step into the astonishing richness of royal life in the 1500s. There is an elegant chapel, some wonderful kitchens and tapestries. You can also wander around the peaceful and pretty Queen Anne gardens on the south side of the castle.

In the Palace vaults, you will find fun interactive exhibitions which the younger visitors will enjoy. There is the Castle exhibition which tells of the castle’s history from the earliest times to the present day. Plus the Stirling Heads gallery, one of Scotland’s great art treasures, the regimental museum and an access gallery where visitors with mobility difficulties can discover parts of the castle that are hard to access.
