Stockport Air Raid Shelters
Stockport Air Raid Shelters is a system of about 1 mile of underground air-raid shelters that were dug under Stockport, Greater Manchester, during WWII to protect the local inhabitants during air raids. Today they are open as a visitor attraction.
The shelters were carved into the natural sandstone cliffs and the intriguing network of underground tunnels gives visitors an unparalleled insight into life in wartime Britain in the 1940s. You will be able to learn about the experiences of local people during the war and see authentically re-equipped tunnels.
There are displays in the tunnels as well as state-of-the-art audio guides. Fully guided explorer tours are available on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 pm. They last approximately 1.5 hours and include parts of the tunnels not accessible in the daytime. There are also children’s explorer tours available in the school holidays.
