Stonehaven Tolbooth Museum

Stonehaven Tolbooth Museum

The Stonehaven Tolbooth Museum is located by the harbour in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire. It is a local historic attraction which is run by the local community. Stonehaven is a picturesque town and the museum is the oldest building in the town. It features a number of artefacts associated with Stonehaven’s heritage. Many of the artefacts are from the days when the building served as a prison.

Visitors can view an original cell door, the Inverbervie stocks and the Crank which was a punishment device which had to be turned by prisoners. Tightening the screws would make it harder for the prisoner which is why prison guards are called screws.

The Stonehaven Tolbooth is thought to have been founded around the mid-16th century. It was a courthouse and prison from 1624 to 1767. The building was renovated in 1963 and later converted into a museum. The museum has a free, dinosaur hunt.
