Stories of Lynn Museum

Museum Overview

Stories of Lynn Museum and Old Gaol Cells are located in the centre of King’s Lynn, Norfolk. The museum explores the history of the town and has many hands-on displays. In the museum, you will learn about the past 800 years of the history of Kings Lynn. You will learn about the town’s most celebrated characters and children can dress up in mayoral robes. In the treasury, you can see a number of impressive historic artefacts including the King John Cup which is a very rare example of a secular medieval cup.

You can explore the Old Gaol House which began life as a medieval prison with four cells. It then became a House of Correction which housed petty criminals and debtors. At its peak, the Victorian gaol held up to 50 prisoners. When it was closed it became a police lockup right up until the 1950s. There are extra activities for children and you will be able to explore the dark dungeons.

To enhance your visit there is the Stories of Lynn app which is available for free from the Apple App Store or Google Play. It is a guide to the town which features informative audio and images. It brings the town’s history to life and includes walking tours of the town, the exhibition, the Gaol house and King’s Lynn town hall. Kids will love the interactive features.
