Museum Overview
The Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life is located in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. It has 20 acres of outdoor space to explore and with free admission, it is a great family day out.
It is situated on the site of the Victorian Summerlee Iron Works and the former Hydrocon Crane factory. The museum depicts Lanarkshire’s contribution to engineering, mining, steelworking, waving and farming. It also shows the lives of the people of the area and includes interactive displays. There are also several steam locomotives on display, preserved carriages and a short working heritage tram line.
In the grounds, there are two scheduled monuments, a large children’s play area and outdoor exhibits. There is also Miner’s Row which shows typical workers’ homes from the 1880s to the 1980s. There is even a sweet shop selling old-fashioned sweets and there is a 1940s house which has a wartime garden and an Anderson shelter. There is even Scotland’s only working heritage tramway which you can take a ride on. Not only that the museum is free to visit.
