Sunderland Museum Winter Gardens

Museum Overview

The Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens are located in the centre of Sunderland, County Durham. The museum has a Designated Collection of national importance.

With a collection dating back to 1846, the history of Sunderland is explored across four floors. There are spaces dedicated to shipbuilding, coal mining, glass making and pottery plus many other aspects of the city’s past. The most famous object is Wallace the Lion who was once part of a touring wild animal show which visited Sunderland in 1868.

There is a Secrets of the Past gallery that delves into aspects of life including the lives of the Anglo-Saxon monks who resided at St Peter’s Monastery in Monkwearmouth. There is a significant collection of works by LS Lowry and temporary exhibitions.

The Winter Gardens are a 21st-century addition to the museum. It is an indoor tropical paradise that is home to its resident Koi Carp. Over 2,000 plants thrive in the glass rotunda and from the tree-top walkway, you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the nearby Mowbray Park.
