Sutton Hoo

Sutton Hoo

Sutton Hoo is the site of two early medieval cemeteries that date from the 6th to 7th centuries. They are located near Woodbridge in Suffolk and there is now an on-site exhibition which provides a fascinating insight into the site.

What is there to do at Sutton Hoo?

Archaeologists have been excavating the area since 1938 when a previously undisturbed ship burial that contained a wealth of Anglo-Saxon artefacts was discovered. The site is now maintained by the National Trust and there are around 254 acres to explore.

The Anglo-Saxon burial ground can be viewed from a 17-metre-high viewing tower. There are displays in Tranmere House exploring the work that has taken place here and the High Hall exhibition explores the world of Anglo-Saxons and original objects that were found here.

You can explore the woodlands and there is a range of walking routes with views across the River Deben towards Woodbridge. They also host seasonal, trails for families and there is a play area located behind the High Hall exhibition which is suitable for children of all ages. At various times of the year, their historic costume volunteers bring the sights of Anglo-Saxon England back to life with demonstrations including spinning, dyeing, leatherwork, basket making, tablet weaving and general weaving.
