The Sygun Copper Mine is located in Beddgelert near Caernarfon, North Wales. It was once a Victorian copper mine which closed in 1903. It was then reopened as a tourist attraction in 1986.
One of the wonders of Wales the copper mines has won a Prince of Wales award for tourism. You will take a self-guided audiovisual tour through the old workings of the mine. There are winding tunnels and large colourful chambers. You will see stalactites and stalagmite formations and copper ore veins which contain traces of gold, silver and other precious metals.
Wrap up warm as it’s always cold down in the mines. Sensible footwear is also recommended. The mines are on three levels with steps and staircases. The total distance of the underground tour is around 500 metres. The underground visit takes around 40 minutes.
The audio presentation features special lighting and sound effects which give you an interesting glimpse into the life of a Victorian copper miner. Plus there is a museum of antiquities. Outside there is a children’s playground and you can enjoy beautiful lakeside walks. For an extra charge, you can have a go at panning for gold or metal detecting for coins.
