Talyllyn Railway

Talyllyn Railway

The Talyllyn Railway is a restored 19th-century railway that was built to carry slate and now offers pleasure rides and exhibitions. It is located at Wharf Station in Tywyn, Wales.

It is a narrow-gauge preserved railway that runs for 7 1/4 miles on the Wales coast to Nant Gwernol near the village of Abergynolwyn. The line was first opened in 1865 and carried slate from the quarries at Bryn Eglwys to Tywyn. In 1951 it became the first railway in the world to be preserved as a heritage railway by volunteers. The museum tells the story of little railways across Britain. The collection ranges from complete locomotives to smaller pieces such as paperwork, signalling equipment and tickets

Today the main station has a two-storey museum and the railway operates a programme of special events, throughout the year. The line has six steam locomotives for passenger trains. The line passes the delightful Dolgoch Falls and there are excellent forest walks at Nant Gwernol station.

The train clings to the hillside as it passes through woodland and over ravines. The trip takes about an hour each way. Your ticket allows you to break your journey and extend your day. You could take a country walk, explore wooded paths, discover waterfalls or visit the beach.
