Tanfield Railway

Tanfield Railway

The Tanfield Railway is a standard gauge heritage railway located in Tanfield Lea, Northumberland. It runs on part of a former horse-drawn colliery wooden wagonway and it operates preserved industrial steam locomotives with unique Victoria carriages. It is said to be the world’s oldest wagonway railway that is still in use.

Trains run on a six-mile round trip through beautiful countryside and a wooded valley. They pass by the Causey Arch which was built in 1727 and is the oldest railway bridge in the world. East Tanfield is the southern terminus of the lane and the former site of the East Tanfield Colliery.

If you disembark the train at the Causeway Arch station you can enjoy a variety of walks in the wooded valley. Andrew’s House is their rural station with a picnic area. Sunniside is the railway’s northern terminus. Here you could enjoy a short walk back to Andrew’s House along the Tanfield railway path. The railway hosts a number of annual events, including a teddy bear’s picnic, gala days, heritage days, a 1940s weekend, Christmas events, and more.
