Tarbat Discovery Centre

The Tarbat Discovery Centre is located in Porthmahomack near Tain in the Scottish Highlands. It is Scotland’s only Pictish Monastic National Monument and the museum unravels some of the mysteries of the Picts.
It is a fascinating building with an intriguing story. It is set in a beautiful location away from the hustle and bustle of the A9. In 1999 the museum opened with much of the space dedicated to recent archaeology finds from a nearby site that was radiocarbon dated to the 6th century. There are interpretations of the once-monastic settlement and its workshops. Pictish art is acknowledged as some of the most beautiful in the world with the many carved stones and cross-slabs left behind being enigmatic as well as beautiful.
There is a Treasury gallery, St Colman’s gallery and a mezzanine gallery. Plus an activity area with things for children can do. There is also a crypt where you can find out more about how in late medieval times it was once the site of an infamous local atrocity.
