Museum Overview

The Beacon Museum is located in the centre of Whitehaven in Cumbria. You can discover the past, present and future in their interactive galleries and exhibitions. There is something for all the family to enjoy. There are a number of galleries including Pop Culture where you can take a trip back into the not-too-distant past. There are toys to discover and you can sit on a chopper bike and present the weather forecast. Plus there is a giant Connect 4 and an arcade machine.

On the 4th floor, there is a viewing gallery with stunning views of the harbour. You can discover how Copeland evolved through time and the development of Whitehaven in Copeland’s changing time gallery. There is even a VR mine experience.

The Sellafield story gallery has new interactives and new information. You can discover the story of how West Cumbria supported the war effort and how technology was later pioneered there to give the UK a nuclear deterrent. Currently, there is a fun Pirates and the Beacon exhibition that is an interactive experience for all the family to enjoy. You can dig for gold, dress up as a pirate and explore the jungle. Please note this exhibition may not always be running.
