The Blackhouse Arnol

The Blackhouse Arnol

The Blackhouse, Arnol is located on the Isle of Lewis in the Scottish Hebrides. It is a small historic tourist attraction that is a traditional, fully furnished thatched house that was built around 1880.

Inside you can gain a unique insight into life in this house that once sheltered a family and its animals, under the same roof. The ruined blackhouse at number 39 can also be seen together with the 1920s ‘white house’ that replaced it.

Gaelic-speaking members of staff are usually on hand to answer questions about crofting life on Lewis. You can smell the peat smoke at the heart of the blackhouse that was never allowed to go out. You can see inside the cosy box beds in the bedroom and see the byre as it was left in 1966 (minus the cows). There is an explorer quiz and a working life quiz for children.
