The Real Mary King's Close

The Real Mary King’s Close is located in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is a warren of streets frozen in time where centuries of stories are waiting to be told. This is a pretty unique tour being offered in Edinburgh that all families are welcome on, although please be aware that younger children may find the experience a little scary.

The close is hidden beneath the characteristic and lively streets of Edinburgh’s busy thoroughfare, the Royal Mile. It is a preserved 17th-century street with a labyrinth of Old Town alleyways. You can discover the stories of the people who lived, worked and died there.

Closes were named after the most prominent citizen or the most commonly found business to be on the close. Mary Kind was a prominent businesswoman in the 1630s. She traded in fabrics and sewed for a living. It was highly unusual for a close to be named after a woman at that time.

This is a one-hour fully guided tour and as they are a sell-out attraction pre-booking in advance to avoid disappointment is highly recommended. Your experience will be brought to life by one of their costumed character tour guides impersonating a former resident from the Old Town closes.
