The Rum Story

The Rum Story is a visitor attraction and museum located in Whitehaven, Cumbria. It tells the story of the rum trade and the creation of rum. The venue is located in an original 1785 trading shop and warehouses.

On your journey around the museum, you will discover the origins of Whitehaven’s part in the trade of enslaved people, from African villages to sugar plantations. You will hear tales of Blackbeard and piracy on the high seas, smugglers and Nelson’s navy.

You can see Elliot Ness’s office and discover the maritime fortunes of Whitehaven. Each set has been carefully recreated to capture the essence of the time and place, There are even some snoring sailors and pirates. Do you dare walk to the end of the cellar to find out if it really is haunted? Many of their settings are so authentic they are used for TV dramas and period films.
