The Shell Grotto

The Shell Grotto

The Shell Grotto is an ornate subterranean passageway decorated in shells located in the centre of Margate in Kent. The underground grotto is Grade I listed and has been open to visitors since 1838 making it one of the UK’s oldest tourist attractions.

Almost all the surface area of the walls and roof is covered in seashells. There are about 2,000 square feet of mosaic and at least 4.6 million shells. The grotto was first discovered in 1835 and its age and purpose remain a mystery. The passageways are around 70 feet in length and finish in a room which is known as the Altar Chamber.

Before you enter the grotto there is a small room with a collection of shell art and some interactive elements including an original Victorian stereoscope and a colouring table. They also have activity sheets for children.
