The Vyne

The Vyne

The Vyne is a 16th-century estate maintained by the National Trust in Sherborne St John, near Basingstoke, Hampshire. There is a red-bricked Tudor mansion which is Grade 1 listed and a ring at the mansion was the inspiration for Lord of the Rings.

In the house, there are 500-year-old Majolica tiles, Renaissance stained glass and beautiful wood carvings in the Tudor chapel. The household treasures collected by the Chute family include furniture, tapestries and paintings. You can explore rooms once enjoyed by Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and Jane Austen. Kids can dress up as a Victorian or take part in a tapestry trail within the house. There is also a children’s play trail outdoors (suggested donation of £1 for the trail sheet).

The house itself is set on 13 acres of pretty gardens with a summerhouse, walled garden and more. There are also acres of woodland with trails that pass ancient trees and a medieval fishpond. The hidden realm is a play area for under 10s. It has a network of turf-covered tunnels with sound tubes for communicating. There is an Iron-Age style wooden fort, bridge, mini bamboo jungle, slide, stream and a deep sandpit surrounding the tunnel.
