Thirlestane Castle
Thirlestane Castle is located near Lauder in the Scottish Borders. It is a magnificent 16th-century castle set within a beautiful estate which is aptly named Castle Hill as it stands upon raised ground within Lauderdale. The castle was originally a great stone keep, over the years it became a grand ducal palace and then a grand country mansion.
It is the historic home of the Duke of Lauderdale and the castle is one of the finest in Scotland and is home today to the Maitland family. They offer guided tours and they also have luxury accommodation and offer riding holidays and more. You can also explore the wider estate with some beautiful walking routes that enjoy some incredible views of the surrounding area. There is a small play park, riverside and castle walk.
During the group tours of the house, you will find out more about the house and its connections to key historical figures such as Bonnie Prince Charlie and Mary Queen of Scots. There is a toy museum featuring Georgian, Edwardian and Victorian toys. They also run a number of annual events.
