Tilbury Fort
Tilbury Fort is an English Heritage property located in Tilbury, Essex. Located on the Thames estuary it protected London’s seaward approach from the 16th century through to the Second World War. The first fort was built by Henry VIII and the present fort is one of the best examples of its type in England with its circuit of moats and bastioned outworks. It is a great family-friendly place to visit with lots to explore.
You can see the magazine house that once stored vast quantities of gunpowder and enter the Bastion magazine passages to discover what life was like for the soldiers that lived there. There is an exhibition that traces the role of the fort in the defence of London.
There are numerous grassed areas and embankments where you can enjoy a picnic. The outer moats, marshes and earthworks are a haven for wildlife. There is also an audio tour that you can take around with you to learn even more about the fort.

Free for members of English Heritage. Adults are £7 without donation, children 5-17 years £4.20, under 5 are free and family tickets are available.
