Museum Overview

The Time and Tide Museum in Great Yarmouth covers aspects of life in Great Yarmouth from its ice age origins to the present day. It is set in one of the UK’s best-preserved Victorian herring curing works and it is Norfolk’s third-largest museum.

At the museum, you can experience the heady atmosphere of a 1950s fish wharf and take the wheel of a steam drifter. Hear gripping tales of wreck and rescue and meet some of the colourful characters who made their living from the sea. You can explore a fisherman’s house and peer inside a Victorian ‘row’. There is a relatively large hoard on display where 30 metal objects were discovered during excavations at Peterhouse Junior School.

You can explore the original smokehouses where the lingering aroma of smoked fish is a reminder of times gone by. There are fascinating archive films shown and hands-on displays which are a great way for kids to learn more about the history of the place. Another exhibit looks at Yarmouth during wartime with a display of the WWII bombing raids that devastated the town. There are plenty of hands-on activities for the kids.
