Tintagel Castle
Tintagel Castle is maintained by English Heritage. It is set in a stunning clifftop location in Tintagel, Cornwall. The castle was originally built half on the mainland and half on a jagged headland that projects into the Cornish Sea. It is one of Britain’s most spectacular historic sites. It was built in the 13th Century and it was possibly occupied during the Roman-British period.
The castle has a long association with legends relating to King Arthur and it has been a tourist destination since the mid-19th century. The site has steep slopes, sheer drops and uneven surfaces. They ask their visitors to keep to a one-way route around the site which means leaving via 140 steep steps so make sure you’re all up to it before visiting.
There is a modern and pretty spectacular footbridge across the island. There are 13th-century ruins to explore in a truly spectacular setting. There are outdoor displays to guide you through the history of the castle and the legends that have played their part in shaping the site. There are early medieval remains to explore and you can imagine what life was like as you walk through the footprints of houses built between the 5th and 7th centuries AD on this remote headland.
The island is a site of special scientific interest and is home to plenty of flora, fauna, wildlife and birds throughout the year. You may even spot seals in the sea. During your visit, you can access the beach below which is great for exploring the rockpools. It is a tidal beach so make yourself aware of the tide times before visiting.
