Totnes Castle

Attraction Overview
Totnes Castle is maintained by English Heritage and it is located in Totnes, Devon. It is one of the best preserved Norman motte and bailey castles that was founded soon after the Conquest to overawe the Saxon town.
The surviving stone keep and curtain wall date from around the 14th Century. You can enjoy sweeping views from the castle across the town rooftops and the River Dart. It’s a bit of a climb up some steps but it is worth it for the views.
There is plenty of space to relax and enjoy a picnic and it is within walking distance of the town. Look out for ‘graffiti’ on the trees that was left by prisoners of war during the Second World War. Once you have explored the castle keep and bailey you can take a walk around the outside wall of the castle.
