Trimontium Museum

Trimontium Museum

Museum Overview

The Trimontium Museum is located in Melrose in the Scottish Borders. The museum tells the story of the fort and its people.

Near the museum is one of the largest Roman fort sites north of Hadrian’s Wall and it is Scotland’s only museum dedicated to the Roman and Iron Ages. The fort and museum are of International importance not only because of their size and location but also because it has one of the largest concentrations of Roman military-related finds in the British Isles. The mystery of this great cache found in 117 pits and wells remains unexplained.

The new museum tells its story and provides a modern window into the turbulent history of this frontier post. There is military equipment and weaponry on display plus shoes, jewellery and other personal possessions. The site of the fort is now agricultural land. The Trust run guided walks from Melrose on a regular basis during the summer season. Around the fort site, there are information boards and memorial stones to guide visitors around the site in a circular walk.
