Tynemouth Priory and Castle

Tynemouth Priory and Castle

Tynemouth Priory and Castle are owned by English Heritage and are located on a rocky headland overlooking Tynemouth in Tyne and Wear. It was once one of the largest fortified areas in England.

There are over 2,000 years of history to discover including the town’s beginnings as an Iron Age settlement to an Anglo-Saxon monastery, a royal castle and a coastal defence. The Life in the Stronghold exhibition is interactive and takes you through most of the important history right up to its importance as a WWII coastal gun battery.

The moated castle towers, gatehouse and keep are combined with the ruins of the Benedictine priory where early kings of Northumbria were once buried. There are some truly spectacular views to enjoy. They also host a number of annual events, with extra activities for families.
