Underground Passages

Underground Passages

The Underground Passages can be found underneath the city centre of Exeter in Devon. You can now visit via guided tours of these medieval subterranean passageways.

What is there to do at Underground Passages?

The passages were once used to transport clean drinking water from natural springs outside the walled city. The water came through lead pipes which sometimes leaked so repairs needed to be carried out. To avoid disruption the passages were vaulted which is now where the tours take place today.

In the passages, you will learn stories of wars, sieges, plague and pestilence. Exeter is the only city in the UK to have underground passages of this type and guided tours have been taking place since the 1930s. Before your tour, you will pass through an interpretation centre that is packed full of interactive displays.

A visit will include a 10-minute film presentation, a 25-minute underground tour and the opportunity to explore the exhibition. Please note that children under the age of 5 are not permitted on the tours. Sensible footwear is recommended and it is advisable to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
