Urquhart Castle

Things to do at Urquhart Castle review
Urquhart Castle is located near Drumnadrochit in the Scottish Highlands. It is a ruined castle that sits beside Loch Ness and the ruins date from the 13th to 16th centuries, though built on the site of an early medieval fortification.
The castle was partially destroyed in 1692 to prevent its use by Jacobite forces, this led to its subsequent decay after the last of the government troops garrisoned there blew it up when they left. It is now one of the most visited castles in Scotland.
During its turbulent history ownership of the castle passed back and forth between the Scots and English during the Wars of Independence. The iconic ruins today offer glimpses into medieval times and the lives of its noble residents.
You can enjoy some wonderful views of Loch Ness from the rocky promontory and soak up the atmosphere of one of Scotland’s most famous lochs. You can explore the ruins and peer into the gloomy prison cell. There are some medieval artefacts on display and a full-size trebuchet.
Kids can take part in their fun fact-finding quiz and there is an audio guide that you can use on your mobile phone with internet access.
