Vale of Rheidol Railway

Vale of Rheidol Railway

The Vale of Rheidol Railway is a steam narrow gauge railway in Ceredigion, Wales. It is situated between Aberystwyth and Devil’s Bridge with a journey of 11 3/4 miles. The railway opened in 1902 and from 1968 until 1989 it was the sole steam-operated line on the nationalised British Rail network.

The railway recreates the Edwardian spirit of adventure. Step aboard one of their restored steam trains for a stunning journey along the Rheidol Valley. The narrow track gauge allows the railway to follow the contours of the terrain with many sharp curves and steep gradients which add to the railway’s charm.

Highlights of a visit include the possibility of visiting the Devil’s Bridge waterfalls where you can discover the legend of Devil’s Bridge. Or you could explore the Pine Marten Den at Devil’s Bridge station. You may even spot some red kites. They were once threatened with extinction but now these birds of prey are often seen from the train. You could also take a walk between their restored stations on one of the many paths and trails. The railway runs a range of annual events.
