Victoria Tunnel Tours

Victoria Tunnel Tours are in subterranean tunnels under Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear. They were built between 1839 and 1943 to transport coal ready for loading onto boats for export. Today you can enjoy tours of the tunnels – please note that all visits must be pre-booked.

What is there to see on the Victoria Tunnel Tours?

The tunnel ran from Spital Tongues Colliery to the river between 1842 and the 1960s. In 1939 it was converted into an air-raid shelter to protect thousands of Newcastle citizens during WWII.

You will explore the tunnels with your guide and experience life in a Victorian wagonway. You will learn how it was constructed, listen to stories and experience realistic sounds. There are also sound effects from the war and you will hear memories of the people who lived through it all including where they slept or sat.

During your tour, you will find out which Newcastle landmarks you are walking beneath including the unique chance to walk underneath Hadrian’s Wall. Tours last for 1hr15 or 2 hours.

You will explore the tunnels with your guide and experience life in a Victorian wagonway when it was used for coal mining and later as an air raid shelter. There is a toilet in the visitor centre.

What are the ticket prices?

1hr15 tour – Adults are £10 and children aged 7-15 are £5. 2-hour tour – Adults are £12 and children are £5. Under-7s are not permitted on their tours.
