West Highland Museum

West Highland Museum

The West Highland Museum is located in the centre of Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. It tells the story of the Scottish Highlands and the islands. Originally founded in 1922 by a group of Lochaber folk. They have provided free, entry since 2011, although they rely on visitor donations and shop sales to keep them open.

Their most renowned and unusual collection relates to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite cause. They also have a wealth of curious and fascinating objects relating to less well-known aspects of the lives of the people of the West Highlands. There are eight rooms packed with things to see including Rob Roy’s sporran, treasures from a shipwrecked Spanish Armada galleon, bagpipes that were played at Bannockburn in 1314 and much more.
