West Stow Country Park and Anglo-Saxon village
West Stow Country Park is home to a reconstructed village and Anglo-Saxon museum. The park that the village is set in is 125 acres in size and it is a great place for a family day out.
What is there to do?
The village and museum feature extensive indoor galleries including the stunning recreation of an Anglo-Saxon village. Visitors can explore history and nature, watch a film, dress up as an Anglo-Saxon or say hello to their rare breed pigs and chickens. West Stow is the site of an early Anglo-Saxon village that was occupied from AD 420 to 650. The trust now has eight recreated buildings including a craft building, a farmers’ house, a living house, a sunken house, a weaving house and a workshop.
The country park features unspoiled countryside with trails, heath and woodland walks. For wildlife enthusiasts, there are two hides and a bird feeding area as well as a lake. The park also boasts an adventure playground with a safe sandy surface. The playground includes slides, climbing equipment, swings and more. There are plenty of picnic benches and visiting the park is a great way to extend your day out.
Kids will love the children’s trail in the park. The Beowulf and Grendel Trail interpretive trail has been inspired by the ancient saga of Beowulf and Grendel and takes you on a journey through parts of the unique Breckland landscape including, heathland – where you will meet the sleeping dragon – woodlands and lake settings.
