Wheal Martyn Clay Works
The Wheal Martyn Clay Works is located in Carthew near St Austell, Cornwall. They are a 26-acre china clay mining museum which features historical exhibits, kid’s attractions and a nature trail. This is the only china clay mining museum in the UK.
China clay mining has shaped the landscape, lives of people and the economy of Cornwall for over 250 years. The fully accredited museum is based on two Victorian china clay works and is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It tells the story of the industry and the people who worked and lived there.
They are an indoor and outdoor museum. Indoors there is the Discovery Centre with interactive exhibits, film footage, voice recordings and a making/drawing area. Outside you can see Crib huts, settling tanks, Wagon huts, Waterwheels and more. There are 26 acres of woodland to explore with nature trails and woodland walks. There is a children’s adventure trail with things to play with along the way.

Once you have purchased your tickets you can return as much as you like for free over the next 12 months. Adults are £12, children aged 5-15 £6, under 5 are free and family tickets are available.
