WWT Martin Mere

WWT Martin Mere is a Wetland centre in Burscough, Lancashire. The nature reserve has a large wildfowl collection which is managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. It is 6 miles from Ormskirk and 10 miles from Southport. In 1985 the site was designated as a world heritage site.
The centre is a great place to stretch your legs and explore nature. You can expect to see geese, plenty of wild birds, flamingos and hopefully otters. There is a relatively new outdoor play area with zip wires, things to climb on and more. It’s a huge adventure playground for ages 3 to 12. Look out for the stepping stones over the water. They often have family-friendly adventure trails so it’s worth asking before you set out walking. There are a number of walks and trails.
Another fun activity is their canoe safari and boat tours. The self-guided canoe safari costs £9 for one hour and you can seat up to 3 people. Children must be 5 years old and at least 95 cm in height. It is a great way to explore the wetland and see areas not accessible on foot.
A recent addition is the Paddle and Play area. It has been designed with accessibility in mind by TouchWood Play. The area features: Inground trampolines. A rain curtain activated by a hand pump. Tunnels to crawl through and explore. A toddler swing and slide. Water play which is perfect for cooling off in the sun. The play area forms part of their Canoe Safari which is reimagined as Paddle and Play, encouraging families to splash, explore, and play in their wetlands.
