Yarmouth Castle

Yarmouth Castle

Yarmouth Castle is an English Heritage property located by the sea in Yarmouth, Isle of Wight. It is an artillery fort which was built in 1547 to protect Yarmouth Harbour from the threat of a French attack.

The fort itself is just under 100 feet across and the square-shaped castle was initially equipped with 15 artillery guns and a garrison of 20 men. It is known as one of the best picnic spots on the island and you will be able to enjoy breathtaking views of the Solent.

You can explore inside the fort and see atmospheric recreations of how the rooms would have looked when they were in use in the 16th century. There is also an exhibition that tells the story of the many shipwrecks that have occurred in the treacherous stretch of sea overlooked by the castle.
