There are some magical family-friendly events happening this festive period across Yorkshire. We’ve put them into one big post for 2024 so you can search for the best Christmas events near you. This includes light trails to suit all ages plus places where your kids can meet Santa. Don’t forget to book in advance this winter so your festive cheer isn’t left feeling disappointed.
Please double-check the event descriptions on the attraction’s website as the below information could change. It is essential that you read their own information carefully, some venues require you to prebook. There’s nothing like attending an event before Christmas Day and enjoying the festive atmosphere. Plus many places have some amazing Christmas decorations, previous years have been a testament to that. We have found plenty of events in North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, East Yorkshire and West Yorkshire.

Info from 2023 – Join Father Christmas for Elf Antics with a brand new tale in the Victorian laundry. Book your place on a group experience – for stories, list checking and gifts. The man in red is visiting Beningbrough once more to rest and recharge ahead of his busy night on Christmas Eve. He loves welcoming visitors and sharing stories of his adventures during the busy build-up to Christmas.
Take a seat in the Victorian laundry for thirty minutes, hear first-hand about the antics of the cheeky elves and help Father Christmas solve a riddle. He’s such a generous man and has told us he’ll bring a few sacks of gifts for the children. There will be time for each child to have a chat and if you’d like to, bring a letter to Father Christmas on the day. Info from last year – Meet St Nicholas and hear his stories and meet silent Lady Winter in their Yuletide grottos this Christmas. Their St Nicholas mirrors the Father Christmas of the past: a wandering storyteller, miracle worker and protector of children, bringing light, generosity, abundance and celebration to the dark months of winter. He is one of the fairy folk: the Holly King, clothed all in green and crowned in evergreens and ivy. Lady Winter, his female counterpart, is the introspective part of winter.
In her grotto, experience the beauty in the barrenness of winter, which she tells us brings an opportunity to rest, to be still and to dream. Info from last year – EXCITEMENT is building at Thorp Perrow Arboretum, near Bedale, with Santa due to arrive on Saturday 25th November! Santa, Mrs Claus and their elf helpers will be welcoming their first visitors of the season to the Grotto after a gloriously seasonal woodland walk through the Arboretum. Your journey begins just like the 2004 motion picture when THE POLAR EXPRESS™ will pick you up at Leeming Bar station to take you to the North Pole. With a variety of family-friendly Christmas activities on offer, there’s something for all ages to enjoy.
On selected dates throughout the holiday season, Scrooge will appear on Kirkgate! Included with a general admission ticket, join them for a family-friendly re-telling of Charles Dickens’s festive novel A Christmas Carol. Info from last year – There will be a trail of giant, hand-carved and painted candy canes in the woodland behind the house. With 24 giant canes – one for each day of Advent – hidden in the branches, will you be able to find them all? Young visitors are particularly welcome and can find a handmade felt snowman doll hidden in each room by the Cunliffe-Lister children.

Info from last year – An abandoned, enchanted mansion overtaken by nature needs your help to break the spell and restore life and laughter to the vast halls and gardens beyond. For Christmas this year, Wentworth Woodhouse are presenting A Tale as Old as Time – a visitor-led experience throughout the State Rooms and West Front Gardens. A magical enchantment has been placed on the House and its inhabitants and they need your help to harness the power of the surviving camellia flowers to bring everything back to life!
Wander through the dressed State Rooms at your leisure throughout the day or combine your visit with their magical Garden Light Trail through Acer Wood from late afternoon. Father Christmas and Mrs Christmas are thrilled to invite you to Harewood House for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of their festive workshop. You’ll navigate an authentic Victorian street to find Scrooge’s office on Christmas Eve, where the miserly mister is counting his pennies. After dismissing the warm-hearted Cratchits and refusing to participate in Christmas cheer, you’ll be at the very centre of the action as the ghostly Marley arrives to warn Scrooge about the errors of his ways.

Info from last year – A magical journey through the enchanting world of Christmas. From visiting Santa in the North Pole to crafting in the Elf Village, there’s something for all the family. Explore the Christmas Traditions Woodland Walk, and Fairy Dell. Marvel at Lotherton’s splendour in the Hall and lit gardens. Warm up with a hot chocolate or mulled wine, don’t forget to visit the Christmas stalls on a weekend.
Visit Santa ‘In The North Pole’ to interact with the elves, join the elf workshop and meet Santa (30-35 minutes) after school and on weekends. Pre-school children can enjoy a shorter Santa visit at ‘Santa’s Cabin‘ on weekdays during term time. Both experiences include a gift – Lotherton Hall

Middleton Railway – Santa Specials – West Yorkshire – Tickets on Sale
Christmas magic will start the moment that you enter the festively decorated Engine House. You will be asked to follow the signs upstairs and through the lit walkway to the waiting area, where you will pick up your tickets and present vouchers from the Ticket Manager. Then at the appropriate time, the Train Manager will take you out to the Santa Special waiting on the platform. On your journey to the park and back Santa will have a specially selected present for each member of his young audience.
When the train returns to Moor Road, please make your way through the decorated Display Hall where you can see Santa in his grotto, and then enjoy tea or coffee with mince pies for the adults, or juice and biscuits for the children. Each child aged up to 10 years inclusive for whom a fare has been paid will be given a present by Santa whilst travelling on the train – Middleton Railway

Info from last year – Join them for their Christmas launch as they light up the Museum for a bumper weekend of festive fun. Enjoy pop-up activities, brass band and choir performances, plus plenty of festive treats including Santa himself! Get crafty with lantern-making workshops over the weekend ready for Sunday’s unmissable lantern parade.
Before Santa goes down your chimney he is going down the mine! Travel 140m underground to join Santa in his unique and atmospheric underground grotto where he will be waiting to meet a few select children. Will the bell place you on the naughty or nice list? Good children will receive a present and certificate while naughty ones will get coal – National Coal Mining Museum

Nostell Priory – Festive Days Out – West Yorkshire – To be Confirmed
Info from last year – Join in the festivities this Christmas as the house is decorated to the nines with a magical fairy tale theme with rooms featuring elements from stories such as Rapunzel, Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast. The fires will be lit, seasonal music will be playing and the trees will be twinkling with pretty lights. Make sure to visit the exquisite Doll’s House will also be decorated with all the Christmas trimmings. The mischievous fairies from the garden trail have their eyes on this miniature, cosy house – watch out for a fairy invasion.
Father Christmas will be visiting the house in the run-up to Christmas. You may spot him as he walks around the house or, perhaps you’ll see him having a cheeky pre-Christmas snooze by the fire. It’s an informal experience with no bookable appointments – he will be drifting around, giving out plenty of waves and smiles and he is always happy to pose for photographs and chat with families – Nostell Priory

Thackray Museum of Medicine – Father Christmas – West Yorkshire – To be confirmed
Father Christmas needs your help as he travels the world exploring the different ways people celebrate Christmas and sampling all his favourite foods! Work your way around the museum finding clues, stopping off for some winter crafting and photographs on the Thackray sleigh. Then meet Father Christmas for some cosy festive stories and a special gift to take home.
This magical 90-minute experience includes an activity trail around the museum, festive crafts, an audience with Father Christmas plus a gift for each child. Please note that your audience with Father Christmas has been designed to take place one hour after your entry time to allow you to enjoy the museum beforehand – Thackray

Enjoy the magical Christmas Elf show before your train ride to the North Pole. Whilst at the North Pole, you will have a one-on-one meeting with the big guy himself inside his cosy grotto, filled with sacks of presents for the good girls & boys. Santa’s cheeky elf will be causing Christmas mischief at the Shelley North Pole – will you spot them?!
There’ll be a complimentary edible festive treat and drink for everyone plus the opportunity to make up a bag of magical reindeer food to take home with you and write out your Christmas wish to hang on the magical Wishing Tree.
