Falling Foss Tea Garden Near Whitby

Falling Foss Tea Garden Near Whitby

There are only a few places we’ve been that have really made us want to go back. Falling Foss Tea Garden is one of them. We stopped here for a wonderful lunch halfway on our May Beck to Falling Foss circular walk. It’s somewhere I’ve wanted to visit for so long and I’m glad we finally made it.

What is there to do at Falling Foss?

We also made the walk down to the bottom of the Falling Foss Waterfall which I’ve covered in this post – It’s worth a read if you are thinking of venturing down there! There is only really one viewpoint from the top because of all the trees.

The tea garden sits directly next to the top of the waterfall. You can’t see it from the garden but you can certainly hear it. It’s a beautiful spot and I can see why someone once built Midge Hall here. The building still stands but where you eat and purchase your food is all outdoors, next to the hall, which is actually a cute woodland cottage.

How long you spend here will depend on the weather. There is a small wooden play area for the kids and there’s an easy-to-access shallow river for paddling in. Make sure you look for the troll under the bridge. If you are parking at Falling Foss the tea garden is just a short walk down from the car park. The paths are not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs.

You are not allowed to picnic in the tea garden. The benches and tables in there are for customers only. There are around 6 picnic benches just before the cottage where you can sit with a picnic. There is a men’s and a ladies’ toilet but they are for customers only.

They have a good choice of sandwiches including bacon which smelt amazing. You can even purchase Prosecco, beer, cider and wine. There’s a good choice of hot drinks and also some cold drinks. We decided to share a tuna sandwich (£4.50) and have a homemade scone with clotted cream and jam each (£1.50). They do not charge enough for this scone of heavenly deliciousness. They also have cakes and other snacks available.

Planning a short break to the area? There are some beautiful hotels in the area including one that is also near another waterfall walk, Mallyan Spout in Goathland. It’s also a great place to stay to enjoy a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors railway.
